My review of "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke

I got this book for christmass from Dave and Jørgen in 2004 - yeah, it's a long time ago.. but since I don't generally review books, and because I'm pretty rubbish at doing it, and because I'm quite fond of this one since it dosn't really talk about the book at all - I thought I'd keep the review on the website - :-)

A book I read quite a while ago now, but I havn't changed this page for a while - "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" by Susanna Clarke

Jonathan Strange & Mr. NorrellHave you ever had LOTS and LOTS of things to do? You sit down and say to yourself "right, I going to get busy, I'm going to clear everything off of this list, I'm going to update my personal website, I will be productive!"

From somewhere else you hear a tiny whisper, you can't tell what it's saying, you ignore it because "dammit I'm going to be productive today!" You turn on the computer, but the voice returns, it's louder this time, and it seems to be your Very Own Voice of Reason. Your VOVOR calmly tells you, in the most rational terms, just how much more productive you will be if you just read your new book for 15 minutes or so, "just 15 minutes, what could possibly be wrong with that? Just think how clear headed you'll be when you start your work after you've spent a few minutes reading your new book? ". Some part of you suspects that the voice is leading you astray, but the voice sounds so clear, so reasonable...

Six hours later you look at the clock and realise what has happened! NO!!! I had so much to do! This evil, enchanted book has stolen an entire day out of my life!. My VOVOR can't be trusted! The dark side this is!

I think this is the VOdarkVOR that speeks to addicts, that convinces them that "one last hit" couldn't possibly be bad. It tells x-smokers to buy a packet of fags and just have one. It is this voice that talks to each of us in the morning (well me anyway) and lets us know that it's OK, after the alarm has been turned off, to close your eyes for one just more minute before getting out of bed.

If you have ever had an inclination to listen to the voice - this could be a very dangerous book for you.
